Seasonal  Pattern In Lake Biwa

Winter Fishing on Lake Biwa

Around mid-December each year, a strong cold front brings the arrival of true winter. Although the water temperature drops below 10 degrees Celsius, Lake Biwa never freezes, allowing for year-round fishing. While bass become less active during winter, they still need to feed to survive, so there are still opportunities to catch them. The smaller bass that were more active during the fall become sluggish due to the cold, and the number of bites decreases. However, the fish you do catch during this season tend to be in excellent condition, making winter an ideal time to possibly break your personal record.

With fewer people on the lake, you can fish in a peaceful and comfortable environment. As most of the weeds die off, the fish congregate around man-made structures, rocky areas, and hard bottoms. While slow fishing techniques are generally the most effective, there are many situations where a swimming jig can also work well. Areas where weeds still remain can also yield good results.

The timing varies from year to year, but by the end of February, more fish start preparing for spawning. If you hit the right timing, you might catch a big pre-spawn bass.

Personally, I enjoy fishing during winter, but be prepared for the cold! We provide warm clothing, so rest assured you'll be comfortable. We recommend this season to experienced anglers looking to catch big fish or break their personal best. On the other hand, beginners might find it challenging due to the cold and the reduced number of bites. If you are determined to fish, we suggest opting for a half-day trip.
